Firewalker Stormwalker Book 2 Allyson James Books

"Despite everything Mick and I had been through, despite what we had together, I knew that Mick still watched me with wariness. He loved me, protected me, shared a bed with me, yes. Had complete faith that I wasn't a danger to every living being on the planet, no."

FINAL DECISION: FIREWALKER which improves and expands upon the paranormal world of the first book in the series has more emotional conflict between the characters and within Janet herself.

THE STORY: Janet Begay, a Stormwalker with goddess power from her evil mother, is concerned that her boyfriend MIck, a dragon, will be put on trial by the dragons for failing to kill her. She wants to help and Mick wants her to stay out of it. Janet is also struggling with her goddess powers that she cannot control. She has been warned that her friends might have to kill her as she becomes a danger to everyone. Also, there is a resurrected killer running around.

OPINION: The problem of Janet's powers and the conflict it brings with her friends and lover was the best part of this book. Janet struggles with the powers she inherited from her mother. Those powers threaten to overcome the person that Janet is. I found this storyline to be more intriguing than the story in the first book in the series. In addition, this book assumes knowledge of the first book and thus there is less worldbuilding than in the first book. Additionally, the relationship between Janet and Mick feels more developed as well. This is a long term series where the character relationships are more slowly developed and there are ongoing and overlapping stories. This book is an episode, but there are many things left unresolved.

WORTH MENTIONING: The relationship between Janet and Mick feels much more developed in this book at by the end of the book has become much more a pairing of equals.

CONNECTED BOOKS: FIREWALKER is the second book in the Stormwalker series. The books should be read in order because the mythology builds upon itself.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Firewalker Stormwalker Book 2 Allyson James Books Reviews

I have loved both books in the Stormwalker series. The first one was an oustanding debut and this one keeps the fire burning.

The books starts right away with Janet and Mick facing the dragon council for their actions in the first book. Mick has been locked away and Janet, with a reluctant Nash in tow, heads out to rescue him. Once she finds him, the action doesn't let up for the whole book.

Janet really comes into her own in this book. She's always had to deal with her Stormwalker powers, but now her Beneath powers are trying to take over. Everyone is worried that she will snap and destroy the world, and they make many demands and ultimatums to her. Through it all, Janet believes in herself and her heart and she comes out stronger for it. She proves all the doubters wrong and makes some powerful new friends in the process.

Mick was pretty hot in this book and I like that he is at least trying to be less secretive. He still needs to work on it, but at least it's progress. Maya, Nash, the magic mirror, Coyote, Fremont, and all the other supporting characters are back. Maya and Nash both grow in this novel and I like them both so much better. I didn't think it was possible for me to like Nash, but I grudgingly give him my blessing now. Ms. James also introduced some great new characters in this book. Cassandra was a gem and I hope that she in is all the books going foward; Pamela can stick around too. Colby was hilarious and a good foil for Mick. Drake is probably going to be a problem.

The plot was fast and furious. Mick is facing the dragon council while Janet is trying to get control of her Beneath powers. They are also trying to find out what evil reanimated the body of a hotel guest and now has him going on a killing spree. Undead Jim was much more interesting than searching for the missing Amy in the first book. I didn't see the twist coming, but I felt like the ending wrapped everything up well while setting up conflict for the next book.

I can't wait to start reading Shadow Walker (Stormwalker, Book 3) and I hope that Nightwalker will actually be released sometimes this year.
OK, OK, I get it. The sex with Mick is mind-blowing; Coyote and Colby want to bed her; Nash has a great view from behind. Cassandra and Pamela want to get it on. The mirror is voyeuristic and salacious. If this series weren't so interesting plot-wise, I'd have given up on it as a bodice-ripper and been done with it.

Speaking of plot, there are a couple of holes in this one, one of which being dragons show up in a limo to escort Janet to a meeting. Dragons can fly, so why are they bothering driving miles and miles? Never mind...the other hole is too much of a spoiler, so I'll let you find it for yourself.

A lot of repetition in this second volume of the series (going over and over the same facts, re-running the same internal conversations), which actually introduced a boredom let's-skip-this-paragraph factor, plus a fascination with people being naked, not only in dreams but in the *ahem* flesh.

The characterizaton of dragons is nicely done, although the fact that dragons have factions within their ranks comes out of nowhere, to add dramatic action to a sitation, with no lead up. Just there it was, one faction squaring off against another.

Still and all, Allyson James tells a good story and has an excellent ear for dialog, with each character having his/her distinct voice. I'll read the third in the series and skim over the hot sex (been there; done that; not interested in reading about it).
