Afterlife Evernight Claudia Gray Books
4.5 starsI read Afterlife knowing a little bits and pieces about what happens in the rest of the series and I can honestly say, I really enjoyed this book, and I didn't feel lost as to what was going on. I know I'm reviewing this series back wards, but that's the way I read it. I've heard for awhile now what a great series The Evernight Series, and I regret I hesitated so long in picking the series up.
Afterlife has some fantastic twists, turns and a shocking ending. It wasn't hard for me to get swept up into the story as there's some awesome action scenes, a great romance and of course a bit of drama. Claudia writes a great story with some engaging paranormal characters, being vampires and wraiths. It wasn't just the main characters Bianca and Lucas who I enjoyed getting to know, as well as Balthazar, but I loved Ranulf and Vic, as they provided more than a few laugh out loud moments for me.
I liked Claudia's twists on her paranormal characters. I've not read a lot of stories with both vampires & wraiths in them, but I really enjoyed this one. Claudia made it work and talk about a unique love story. Not to giveaway spoilers, but Lucas and Bianca's relationship can't seem to catch a break, and they definitely do all they can to make it work. I am a sucker for the unwavering love they both have for each other, and let me say, the ending completely took me by surprise! Talk about a sacrifice.
Afterlife is an example of another awesome way to wrap up a series. I am really looking forward to reading more of Claudia's books including her next series with Balthazar. Don't wait as long as I did to read this series, I would definitely recommend picking up next time you're at the store. Afterlife Evernight Claudia Gray Books Reviews
The first three books were good. But this one was garbage. Did she even write this one? I was surprised by her poor writing in this.
It was bitter-sweet, finishing this series. Lucas and Bianca's romance is one of my favorites and I was excited to finally get my hands on Afterlife. Often, I find myself thinking about the characters and the world of Evernight, unable to let them go completely.
Whenever I think of Evernight and it's memorable characters, I think about when I first started Evernight in early 2010 (Evernight is actually the first YA book I ever bought, now that I think about it) and how it's always had a special place in my heart ever since. The first book in the series is my favorite, by far, and I constantly reread that one because reading Lucas and Bianca's relationship build was one of the cutest things ever and I can never get enough of it.
I thought Afterlife was totally satisfying. Lucas has turned into the very thing he lived to kill a vampire. It was so hard to watch how he dealt with that and how he felt about himself. And knowing how much he prides himself on not needing anybody's help just made it that much harder to see him turn up at Evernight's doorstep in a last attempt at keeping his sanity. And Bianca, not being able to comfort him like she used to, was having trouble adjusting to her own new life (or should i say, afterlife? im sorry), also. I think by the end of this journey, though, it just made them more self-aware, and it made them love each other more and become more understanding of each others situations. I was also sad at the rough turn Lucas and Bianca's relationship took, and also Balthazar and Bianca's friendship, but it only made the ending so much more ... emotional, thoroughly satisfying, immensely thrilling.
Not only was I totally hooked on Lucas and Bianca, but Balthazar, Vic, Ranulf, and Patrice were all so enticing to the series also! Balthazar has always been a favorite character of mine since the beginning; at one point, I was rooting for him to get with Bianca but it was only because I felt that he deserved to have somebody--I mean, he's been alone for so long and he's such a nice and caring guy. He needs someone. And I'm glad that he and Lucas are finally friends with each other. And Vic ... he is truly one of a kind. I've never come across a character quite like him before and I love him. Him and Ranulf--albeit, obliviously--were definitely the comic relief that most stories have and they fit the roles nicely. Patrice has always been a sort of so-so character for me, but she stepped up when Bianca needed her and her loyalty to her friends had me liking her more and more.
Each and every character in this series is memorable and it's so easy to get emotionally invested in them--they just demand your love! They've left a warm feeling inside me and I'm finding it hard to let them go, to move on from this series. I dream up scenarios in my head of how the characters end up and what happens to them. It's maddening, but it just means that I love them too much.
One thing about Afterlife, though I felt like the whole Charity plot line was pointless to the series. I mean, besides turning Lucas into a vampire, what role did she play in the grand scheme of things?? After being one of the main antagonists for 2 books already, I thought there would be a lot more complexity in solving the Charity problem, but it was so simple to fix in the end. I was waiting for some epic showdown but alas, there was none--involving Charity, at least (wink wink, nudge nudge).
Another thing that bugged me throughout the entire series was Bianca's POV on some things. In her head, it was like everyone was trying to accommodate her. Like ... if Lucas and Balthazar were arguing and Balthazar would just stop the argument before it got too heated, Bianca would think that he stopped because of her, because she wouldn't like it. Why couldn't he have just stopped because he didn't want a full on fight to break out with Lucas?? Why does Bianca feel as though everyone makes decisions around her feelings? UGH. It bugged the hell out of me for the longest time.
And finally, I was so excited when this book finally answered the one question that I had since the second book Why was Mrs. Bethany luring wraiths to Evernight Academy?
