Thunder; an Elephant’s Journey is the best animal story I’ve read in many years. It is a pleasant mixture of realism and fantasy that will keep kids (and adults) turning pages to the end and wanting more. Thunder is an immature elephant separated prematurely from his mother, Serenity. His sole mission of his young life is to find her and his herd. He makes several friends among the animals he meets, including a flamingo, a parrot, hippos, egrets, monkeys, and many more. It also describes a poaching incident that caused me pain and a desire to get involved with the anti-poaching movement.Eventually, Thunder and his group arrive at Heart Haven, a green valley hidden by surrounding cliffs with a small, hidden opening to admit the animals. Here there is peace and tranquility with no threat from poachers or predators, a kind of paradise on earth.
This needs to be made into a movie to tell the world this is happening to many species that are in decline, threatened or in danger of extinction. Thunder would make an excellent mascot for a movement against poaching, with the movie as the verbal message.
Highly recommended for children and adults.

Grandson enjoyed them
A story that teaches about separation and fighting to get back to your loved ones (What an adventure). It also tells the story of poacher and how disruptive they can be.
This is such a cute story. Not only does it tell you the dangers in Africa, but also that friends don't always have to be the same. Yes, this story is for children, BUT I think adults should read it also. We tend to forget that differences is what makes friends even better.
The characters are animals, but they are funny! We all need to laugh!! I will encourage everyone to read this story!!
Hi loved this book. It was the first to inspire me in a long time since I've seen an old friend that let me borrow a long lost part of me.
I was captivated within the first few pages. I fell in love with Thunder and all the characters he met on his journey. The story line is fun, funny, and is also educational in many ways, from dealing with poachers, to the threats of dangerous animals that are found in African wildlife. Excellent read and I highly recommend it to people of all ages.
Parental note Since each family allows or does not allow certain subjects for their children, I recommend that parents read this book first to determine if it is appropriate for their young ones.
Thunder, an African pygmy elephant, is separated from his herd. As he is doing all he can to get back to them, he meets several interesting animals. Many of them become his friend and help him along the way.
In some ways, reading this book reminded me of Bambi and some other Disney movies I've seen with the children in my life. I think this book would make a wonderful animated movie. Each animal character had their own personality and are very relatable. The underlying theme is one that many people should hear.
Note I'm not your typical kids book reader.
Review
I enjoyed reading this book. The friendships created were easy and plentiful, much like how children make friends. There were the happiest of moments, scary moments, and very sad moments. This book takes you through all of the emotions. Yes, I even caught myself sniffling and needing a tissue.
While reading this tale, I kept picturing the animals talking to each other in cartoon form in my head. I hope this becomes a new favorite in everyone's home -- on book and DVD.
Thunder was my favorite character. Frederick was probably my least favorite. Soma was my second favorite for her honesty and vulnerability.
Recommended read.
