You know those movie ads that go, "If you only see one movie this year about zombie, mercenary aliens - make it this one"? Well, that's exactly how I felt about this book. If you only read one destiny marked smart girl torn between a possibly supernatural good bad boy and a definitely supernatural bad good boy - make it this one.

I think the main appeal, (because I'm not really drawn to the boyfriend drama), is that the heroine, Sophie, is a very substantial, level headed and appealing character, and the book is well written. And I don't mean well written as "smooth" or titillating or snarky or anything like that. I mean well written in a grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, syntax, actual construction of paragraphs way. It's really very refreshing to read a teen supernatural romance adventure that is just very well constructed.

It helps immensely that the author has tweaked the characters right into my wheelhouse. The heroine's parents and sister aren't psychos or weird types; they are likeable and smart and supportive people. The heroine's sidekick is a hoot, without being a ditz. The two boys are hot and smell good and so on, but they aren't these wan, fey, pale creepy vamp types. There's a good deal of teen angst, but everyone is self-aware enough to understand why they're occasionally being jerks, and I'm good with that.

And, bottom line, Sophie is alert, observant, grounded and has spine and spirit. Sure, she gets all melty over her boys, but not in a stupid way. I liked her and I liked the way she thought through her situation, protected herself, and tried to come up with logical solutions to her predicaments. She's a lot more "Hunger Games" than "Twilight", and that's fine by me.

This book is set in Hickman, Kentucky, which is a very real place, below Paducah and across the river from Cairo, Illinois. For a laugh you should look Hickman up on Google Maps and put your little "you are there man" on Magnolia street and look around. You can actually see what Sophie is seeing, which for some reason is very charming.

So, a brief but entertaining read that's populated by engaging characters. First in a series, I'd check in on these people again in another volume. (Please note that I found this book while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
